Opened in 1987 by designer and entrepreneur Shanth Fernando, Paradise Road began as a retail store stocking locally made contemporary house and giftware made exclusively by local craftsmen. It has since grown to consist of two large stores. PARADISE ROAD and PARADISE ROAD STUDIO HOUSE, an exclusive store carrying both specially selected local and imported home ware. Both stores are housed in old British colonial houses. Paradise Road on Dharmapala Mawatha has a quaint café overlooking Colombo’s beautiful Town Hall building and serves simple lunches, delicious cakes, fresh juices and a good cup of coffee.
THE GALLERY CAFÉ was rated ‘One of Asia’s top ten restaurants’ by East Magazine. Housed in what was the office of renowned Sri Lankan Architect Geoffrey Bawa, this alfresco restaurant, bar and lounge is known for its delicious food, celebrated desserts and legendary cocktails; the ambience is not to be missed on visiting Colombo. Exhibitions of local contemporary art are always on display for sale on the premises and there is also a small gift store which is open till 10.30pm.
